A frequent speaker on Scanlon and Leadership Paul has been an invitational speaker for the European Foundation, the Academy of Management, the Conference Board, The Japanese External Trade Organization, the American Society for Training and Development, The Ecology of Work Conferences, The Greenleaf Center Conference and Dyad Development of South Africa.
He has worked with Scanlon Network members throughout North America—consulting, training, and developing Scanlon programs and services. He created the Scanlon 101 and Scanlon Leadership Programs. He created the E.P.I.C. Culture Inventory™ and the Scanlon Roadmap learning map. He assisted in the development of the Network’s Listening Program, the Lean Sim Machine™, and Hoshin Quick Start™. He developed the Network's Best Practices Program. He helped in the development of Scanlon Plans at Watermark Credit Union and United Building Centers. He currently is developing a Scanlon Process with ELGA Credit Union.
His article “Leadership from Theory to Action” appeared in Leading-Edge Magazine. His article “The ABC’s of Gainsharing” appeared in Physician Compensation and The Employee Ownership Law Review. His article “Hoshin Planning” appeared in the Lansing Business Journal. He coauthored with Dow Scott and Chuck Cockburn “Scanlon Principles and Processes: Building Excellence at Watermark Credit Union” which appeared in the World of Work Journal and Incentive Compensation. His white-paper on Innovation resulted in invitations to speak on Innovation at Queens's College. Paul received the Scanlon Stewardship Award in 2007.
In 2008 Paul edited with Larry Spears "Scanlon EPIC Leadership: Where the Best Ideas Come Together" the definitive anthology of Scanlon thought and practice. In 2009 he worked with Larry again to edit "The Human Treatment of Human Beings" the writings of Scanlon Leader John Donnelly. In 2011 Paul completed his third book with Larry, "Fortuitous Encounters: Wisdom Stories for Learning and Growth."
Prior to serving as President of the Scanlon Leadership Network, Paul was Director of Management Programs at General Motors Institute. In this role he was an early advocate of team development and lean practices. His work with Buick-City was credited with increasing Buick's market share. He pioneered team building in the skilled trades for the AC Rochester Division. He led a trade mission to Japan and was an early adopter of Japanese lean management practices.
Paul has a Masters in Labor and Industrial Relations from Michigan State University. He is a Walter Reuther Scholar and interned at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change.
